As a double transplant recipient, health care is more than just policy to me; it’s a matter of life and death. I believes that healthcare is a human right that should not have a profit motive and she will fight until every American is covered. In addition, it costs us less. The foundation for this ideal is found in our nation’s guiding principles- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
A national, single payer program that is patterned after the system in Singapore is my goal for universal healthcare and the majority of Americans now support this idea including republicans. What has held us back from this extremely popular policy in corporate PAC money in Congress. Democrats and Republicans alike are padding health care to protect the monopolies that drive costs up and they limit bargaining power. The system is not built to protect American lives; it is built to protect profits. American healthcare is a standoff controlled by corporations who say, “You’re money or your life”.
American tax money through grants and our own NIH, invent 99% of all new medications which we then paten to private companies who then pay for testing, FDA approval, manufacturing and marketing. But they sell to Americans at 3 to 4 times they cost. The vertical market monopoly costs us more and produces lower outcomes. The first thing “We the People” need to do is change the patent laws before we sell to a company and the second thing is to bring bargaining power back to the people. Once a company buys a patent, it spend a lot of money to get it to market. I want these companies to make a decent profit – AS LONG AS THEY’RE NOT KILLING US.
Americans do not need health insurance; they need affordable healthCARE. It’s time to cut out the middleman, trust bust monopolies so they can not price fix or pull generics and affordable options (remember what happened to the price of insulin?) and put care decisions back in the hands of doctors who take the Hippocratic oath and know you.
